If you’ve poked through the site at all in the last week or so you may have noticed a brand new feature: an email sign-up at the bottom of blog posts.
The Fiction Seed is official in more ways than one: Not only is it officially the Fiction Seed LLC, I’m also building out options including a newsletter, monthly prompt releases and (eventually) classes.
What’s Coming Up
The newsletter isn’t a big surprise. I already write blog posts, so a newsletter seemed a fairly simple side-ways step. Unfortunately, while I’d love to continue giving away what I do for free, there’s no feasible way to do that. Just hosting a website costs hundreds yearly on what’s nearly the most basic plan available.
Let me be clear: there will always be a free option from the Fiction Seed. Writing is one of the few hobbies with the lowest cost of entry to newcomers. I can’t in good conscience block anyone from that.
In fact, I’m planning to pivot the blog to focus on more writing exercises and writing challenges. Everything that’s already here will remain accessible. That includes old prompts and previous articles.
Free subscribers will get 30 free prompts and writing challenges. I’ll also be adding a writing basics newsletter for free subscribers to give you more options and help educate new writers.
But with all that, I have to find a way to fund everything. Which means there is now a paid newsletter option, which includes:
- Explorations. These have been up for a couple of months and I love putting them together! They also take the most significant amount of time to put together.
- Prompt Packets. These include the 100+ prompts written for the monthly theme, as well as 12 character concepts, 12 location concepts and 2 concept tables.
I understand not everyone can afford yet another subscription and believe me, as an artist it feels a little weird to try and put a price tag on any of my work, much less a recurring price tag. Because of all that, the full prompt packets and explorations will both be available at the end of the month as one-off, downloadable purchases.
More things I’ll be opening up over the next few months:
- Story Development Services. Have an idea, or even a finished story? Get feedback and pointers on what’s working and what needs improvement from a writer.
- Lessons and classes. I’ll test out both recorded lessons and virtual classes focused around the explorations. Unfortunately, this definitely means figuring out recording equipment so it’ll be a little while before these are available.
The end goal for all of this is that I want you to be writing: that is the end all and be all of everything I post here. I want you to write. Now more than ever human stories matter.
